Plants and Mankind

Botany, the study of pants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. We don't know what our stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist,a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical.Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapon, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter, and many other purposes.Tribes living today in the jungle of the Amazon recognize hundreds of plants and know many properties of each.To them botany has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of"knowledge"at all.

Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct out knowledge of botany grows.Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose an apple or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken.Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture:cultivated crops. From then on,humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade away.

With the world's population estimated to grow from six to nine billion by 205,researchers,businesses and governments are already dealing with the impact, this increase will have on everything from food and water to infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)and jobs.Underling all this 1 will be the demand for energy, which is expected to double over the next 40 years.

For example, even with 7 investments, such as the$93 million for wind energy development 8 in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,important alternative energy sources such as wind and bio fuels 9 only about 1%of the market today.

Energy and sustainability experts say the answer to our future energy needs will likely come from a lot of 10--both traditional and alternative.

A.stable

B.solutions

C.significant

D.role

E.progress

F.marvelous

G.included

H.growth

I.exactly

J.consist

K.comprise

L.competitions

M.combined

N.challenges

O.certainly

play a…in提示了此處選role,play a role in是固定搭配,表示“在…

The answer to… 的方法”之意,solutions(解決方法,處理手段)符合語義

Although the popular belief is that internet increasingly plays an important role in our daily life,a current survey indicates that it has also brought some youngsters great disadvantages. They can do whatever they like, such matters as playing games, chatting. And some are even falling in love with chatters, which is called on-line love.

Fresh notion as on-line love is,it sounds ridiculous when analyzed profoundly. What these young people fail to understand is that both sides have not well acquainted with mutually. Some net friends are reported to have been deceived by those people who are doing some criminal activities per year through the internet.

Internet has indubitably provided various information for us,and on-line love is nothing but an artifact of fictitious world offered by internet. On the other hand,it is vital that we should make internet serve us better, and at the same time,as far as on-line love is concerned, being objective and levelheaded analysis is not far from being a sensible attitude.
