A great difference between American social customs and those of other countries is the way in which names are used. Americans have little concern for “rank”, especially socially. Most Americans do not want to be treated in any especially respectful way because of their age or social rank; it makes them feel uncomfortable. Many Americans even find the terms “Mr.”, “Mrs” or “Miss” too formal. People of all ages may prefer to be called by their first names. “Don’t call me Mrs Smith. Just call me Sally.” Using only first names usually indicates friendliness and acceptance. However, if you do not feel comfortable using only first names, it is quite acceptable to be more formal. Just smile and say that after a while you will use first names but you are accustomed to being more when you first meet someone.

Very often, introductions are made using both first and last names: “ Mary Smith, this is John Jones.” In this situation you are free to decide whether to call the lady “Mary” or “Miss Smith”. Sometimes both of you will begin a conversation using last names, and after a while one or both of you may begin using first names instead. You have a choice: if you don’t want to use first names so quickly, no one will think it impolite if you continue according to you own custom.

PASSAGE 1

Passage 2

Questions 6-10 are based the following passage

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end-with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good’n Wet Root Beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It! Buy It Now!”

The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed-new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with you legs crossed, with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.

6. According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?

A. Buses on the road.

B. Films on television.

C. Advertisements on the board.

D. Gas stations.

7. What is the purpose of this passage?

A. To give the writer’s opinion about long bus trips.

B. To persuade you to take a long bus trip.

C. To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.

D. To describe the billboards along the road.

8. The writer of this passage would probably favor

A. bus drivers who weren’t reckless

B. driving alone

C. a television set on the bus

D. no billboards along the road

9. The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because

A. the commercials both on TV shows and on billboards along the road are fun

B. they both have a beginning, a middle, and an end, with commercials in between

C. the drivers are always reckless on TV shows just as they are on buses

D. both traveling and watching TV are not exciting

10. The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are

A. exciting B. comfortable C. tiring D. boring

PASSAGE2

“the commercials”是“商業(yè)廣告”的意思;“billboard” 是“廣告牌”的意思,即 “advertisements on the board”。

Passage 3

Questions 11-15 are based on the following passage

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, “a heightening of life, enjoyment with others”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life” It also deserves a place in the teaching of languages and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

11. According to the passage, to have a better understanding of a poem, the best way is

A. to discuss it with others

B. to analyze it by oneself

C. to hear it read out

D. to practice reading it aloud

12. The recitation of a poetry by the teacher or a student in the classroom

A. is the best way to understand it

B. easily arouses some discussion among the students

C. helps the teachers to analyse it

D. can not take the place of the poet reading it analyse

13. According to the author, one of the purposes of teaching English is getting students

A. to criticize life B. to like poetry

C. to enjoy life D. to teach poetry

14. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?

A. The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed

B. The teaching of poetry is more important than the teaching of any other subject.

C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.

D. Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.

15. The phrase “make room” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by

A. “build a booth” B. “provide equipment”

C. “l(fā)eave a certain amount of time” D. “set aside enough space”

PASSAGE 3

(To place emphasis on; emphasize)

15、C “make room for” 本意是“為…… 此處應(yīng)理解為在課上安排時間聆聽和思考詩歌,即 “l(fā)eave a certain amount of time”之意。

Part Ⅱ

The two planes missed disaster by a few inches when they nearly collided. I turned to the side of the road to avoid a collision. We go south to escape the winter. If you are late again, you’ll be dismissed (from your job).

No one has read it but me.或者No one but me has read it.

本句的意思是:“據(jù)說他犯了謀殺罪?!?A. commit 是“犯(錯誤、罪刑)”的意思,賓語常常是表示罪名的詞,如:commit a crime/a sin/suicide/murder. B. conduct 是“指揮、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)”的意思,如:conduct a meeting C. execute 是“執(zhí)行、實行”的意思,如:execute the decisions of the government D. emit 是“發(fā)射、發(fā)出”的意識,如:a stove emitting heat

主句:主語 + would (could, should, might) + 動詞原形 +……

6、B 本題測試的是強調(diào)句型“It is (was)…thatwho…”當(dāng)強調(diào)的是人的時候用who ,其他都用that;who和that都不能省略。

7、D would have done sth與must have done sth都表示對過去時間里可能發(fā)生的事情的推測后者語氣較強,具有"肯定","務(wù)必"的意思;前者有 “本來要/會”的意思。

By criticizing the boss he risked losing his job. She risked her life trying to save the drowning child.

A reason 是“原因,理由”的意思,應(yīng)與“to do”搭配,例如:They have said the new product will be a success, and I see no reason to doubt it. B excuse 是“借口、理由”的意思,應(yīng)與“for doing sth”或者“to do sth”搭配,例如:his excuse for being late; to think of an excuse to leave C point 有“目的、好處”之意,與“in/of doing sth”搭配。例如:I see no point in trying to persuade him—he’ll never change his mind. D chance 是“機會、可能”的意思,應(yīng)與“to do sth” 搭配,例如:He had no chance to apologize.

10、A Hardly/Scarcely…when和no sooner…than… Not until the early years of the 19th century did man know what heat is.

11、B本題測試的是go on doing sth和go on to do sth的區(qū)別,go on doing sth 是“繼續(xù)做同一件事”的意思,go on to do sth是“(做完一件事后)繼續(xù)做另一件事”的意思。

虛擬過去時if 從句的謂語形式用過去完成時即had+過去分詞,主句用would / should / could / might + have +過去分詞,有時可以連詞if 省去,而將had , should, were 等詞提到主語之前,即用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)。 If it had not been for his help(=but for his help),we would not have succeeded.

A available 是“可獲得、可用的”的意思,可做后置定語,例如:shoes available in your size B enough “足夠的”,用在復(fù)數(shù)或者不可數(shù)名詞前。C supply 是“提供”的意思,用法是supply sb with sth/supply sth to sb, 不與for sb 搭配 D make 是動詞原形,“制作、使成為”之意,在此句 中不能做定語。

15、B 本題測試的是非謂語動詞作定語的用法,現(xiàn)在分詞(D discussing)表示主動、并且正在發(fā)生,過去分詞(A discussed)表示被動、已經(jīng)結(jié)束的動作,動詞不定式(to do)表示將要發(fā)生的動作,B to be discussed 是動詞不定式的被動形式。

Put out 是“熄滅、出版”的意思;put off 是“推遲”的意思;put on 是“穿上、假裝”的意思;put up 是“舉起”的意思。

17、A在英語中的表示“命令、要求、建議”等的詞,往往要用虛擬語氣,例如:recommend/recommendation, require/requirement ,advise/advice, suggest/suggestion等等。

18、A It’s (high, about) time that 句型中that從句中要求用虛擬語氣形式,即動詞要用過去式。

引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句時相當(dāng)于“No matter what”,例如:Whatever/No matter what we said, he'd disagree. 但是,that, what不能引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句,wherever可以引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句,相當(dāng)于“no matter where”, 但是where和wherever是副詞,不能同時做從句的主語,只能做地點狀語,如:He seems to make enemies wherever he goes.

Reach 是及物動詞,arrive是不及物動詞,與介詞at搭配,arrival是arrive的名詞,也需與at 搭配,如:arrive (arrival) at/ reach the station。On sth/doing sth 表示“一…… On entering the room, she saw him.

I have tried to get my point across. I’m sorry I’m late; I was in a meeting and couldn’t get away. How shall we get over this difficulty. We were all delighted when we heard you’d got through your exam.

(an idea) occur to sb是“(主意)浮現(xiàn)在腦中、被想起”的意思。 眛hat引導(dǎo)的主語從句是真正的主語,而大部分主語從句都可以用it作形式主語,特別是主句謂語動詞是 appear, turn out, happen, occur, come, strike, follow, matter 等時一般用it作形式主語,例如:It happened that she had a cold and didn't go with us that day. It turned out that I was wrong.

23、B本題測試的是詞組come to a conclusion和come to an end. Come to /draw/reach a conclusion是“得出結(jié)論”的意思,例如:We come to the conclusion that she was telling the truth. Come to an end是“結(jié)束”的意思,主語應(yīng)是sth,例如:At last the war came to an end. Result和judgment不與come to搭配。

24、C must have done表示對過去發(fā)生事情的推測。

27、A/D 本題測試的是賓語從句的引導(dǎo)詞和whether/if的區(qū)別。Doubt是“懷疑”的意思,肯定句的賓語從句用that/whether/if引導(dǎo),否定句用that引導(dǎo),例如:I doubt that/whether/if she will get the job. I don’t doubt that she is telling the truth. 另外,whether可以與or not連用,而if不可以。

Have sb do sth是“讓某人做某事”的意思。

It is no use doing sth。 It's no use quarrelling. It is no use crying over spilt milk.

Where, when和how都是關(guān)系副詞。

6、B bring 與into搭配,bring sth into someplace是將某事物引進、帶進某個地方。

9、C 根據(jù)本句已經(jīng)出現(xiàn)的結(jié)構(gòu)so…that…,可以推斷出選C

10、B get 是本句的主要動詞,get dependent on 與get used to是并列結(jié)構(gòu)。

Break down是“失效、沒用了”之意,break up 是“破碎”之意,break off 是“折斷”之意,break out是“爆發(fā)”之意。

By itself“單獨地”, of itself “自然而然地”,in itself“本質(zhì)上、完全地”都不符合句意。

19、 B put sth to use

20、D value to society
