二、閱讀理解(11-30)

The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to iflness is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 70 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

Many visitors find the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One' s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment.

At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. Drivers will rush you ; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you ; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well.

Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to "push back", just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be. If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly-looking person and say, "I am a stranger here. Can you help me?"

Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find your way, or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. If this happens, do not be discouraged : just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.

There are many shops in Singapore where customers still.bargain, although prices are clearly shown on the goods. There is nothing out of the ordinary in haggling; some shopkeepers expect you to and will be surprised if you accept their prices immediately. We know that the prices in some stores are a bit higher than those in Change Alley, but we also realize that to keep a store like Robinson' s is by no means cheap. Besides, in such places we shop in air-condition comfort. For all these, we pay a little extra.

It is not always true to say that things in Change Alley cost less. I once bought a Czechoslo-vakian glass butter-dish from Robinson' s for a little under two dollars. I then went on to Change Alley and just by chance saw an article of the same shape, design and size, in one of the shops. ! then asked about its price, and was surprised when the man demanded more than four dollars for it.

"How much can you offer?" he shouted at me. I offered him exactly the same price I paid for the article and his reply was shockingly rude. I opened my bag, showed him my receipt, stared at him and walked out of his shop.

A buyer in England expects to find the price of goods clearly shown, or, to be told exactly what the price is. He knows this is the lowest price that will be accepted. If he thinks the price is beyond what he can afford, he shrugs his shoulders and walks away. He does not attempt to bargain with the shopkeeper. Even if he showed annoyance or surprise, he would expect to be told that if the price was unacceptable, he should try elsewhere.

21.The underlined word "haggling" (Line 2, Para. 1 ) in the text most probably means __________.

D. paying extra for comfortable shopping

It is really a surprise that after hundreds of years, educationists have still failed to design anything more efficient and reliable than examinations. It is claimed that examinations test what you know, but it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite. They may be a good means of testing memory, or the skills of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person' s true ability.

As anxiety-makers, examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the mark of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in one fateful day. No one can show his best in wotwy, or after a sleepless night, yet this is precisely what the examination system expects him to do.

A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The examination system, however, does anything but that. What has to be learnt is laid down by a syllabus (教學(xué)大綱), so the student is encouraged to memorize. Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, and they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge. Furthermore, teachers themselves are often judged by the results of their students' examinations. Consequently, they have to train their students to master exam techniques which they dislike. The most successful candidates are not always the best educated but the best trained.

The results on which so much depends are often nothing more than a subjective assessment by some anonymous (匿名的 )examiners. They certainly make mistakes, because they have to mark mountains of scripts (答卷) in a limited amount of time. They work under the same sort of pressure as the candidates.

51. What makes a home? Love, sympathy and confidence. It is a place where kindly affections exist among all the members of the family. The parents take good care of their children, and the children are interested in the activities of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection, and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world.

A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is aman. Every civilized person is a social being. No one should live alone. A man may lead a successful and prosperous life, but prosperity alone can by no means insure happiness. Many great personages in the world history had deep affections for their homes.

Your home may be poor and humble, but your duty lies there. You should try to make it cheerful and comfortable. The greater the difficulties are, the richer your reward will be.

The Importance of Keeping a Good Mood

It is tree that our mood or the state of mind controls our life. However, modem people are enduring so much pressure from education, career or family that they are more bad-tempered than before. There are often tragic stories in the newspapers about people who went insane or committed suicide. Therefore, it is important to overcome the pressure and keep a good mood.

Many remarkable factors contribute to this argument. First of all, keeping a good mood can help people take a right attitude towards various difficulties and challenges. For example, some people have failed in business for several times and are in deep debt, but they never give up their hope and still believe they have the ability to be successful. Furthermore, keeping a good mood can help people put

disappointment and frustration in the right perspective. Besides, keeping a good mood does good to physical health, which make people far away from many diseases.

All mentioned above tells us that how important it is to keep a good mood. Therefore, there is no denying that we must remind ourselves of keeping a good mood under whatever circumstances. In conclusion, with a good mood, we can live a more interesting and happier life.
