二、閱讀理解(11-30)
A national survey showed that many of America' s public school teachers spend their own time expanding the knowledge and skills.
Professional training is a way of life for many teachers. Some even go to summer schools to learn new skills and keep up with advances in technology.
The average teacher has 25 years of classroom experience and more than half hold a master' s degree. Nearly 23 percent began full-time teaching within the past five years. This statistic should cause some concerns because it means a large number of teachers are reaching the retirement age. If this trend is not recognized, at some point this will result in an experience gap.
With salaries based on fewer hours and no overtime, the complaints of the teachers become more understandable. Many outsiders feel that the long summer vacations justify lower pay scales, but in reality, many teachers spend a good part of their vacation honing their skills for the upcoming year, Facing a classroom unprepared is tougher on the teacher than on students.
Even with all of these, three fifths of teachers (60 percent) said they would become teachers again. However, there were many who said they would not choose teaching as a career if they could start over again.
For the first time, the survey sought the reasons for teachers leaving the profession. The most often cited reason (37 percent )for abandoning their training and professional experience was low salaries. Minority teachers (50 percent), male teachers(43 percent),and teachers under 30 (47 percent) were most likely to claim low pay as the reason they will not stay in teaching.
11.What do we know about American public school teachers from the passage?
A. They either have a master' s degree or enough experience.
B. They spend time expanding their knowledge and skills.
C. They are asked to keep up with advanced technology.
D. They must go to summer school to learn new skills.
答案:B
12.The concern caused by the statistic is that__________.

B. 23 percent of teachers lack experience
C. more than half of the teachers will retire soon
D. there are more experienced teachers than the inexperienced ones
答案:A

A. Lack of experience.
B. No overtime work.
C. Summer school for learning.
D. The low salary.
答案:D
15.Which of the following may justify the teachers' lower salary scales according to the outsiders?
A. Long summer vacations.
B. Easier work.
C. Lower academic degree.
D. Less work stress.
答案:A
America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.
Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while--then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted.
This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality ( 好客 ) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don' t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

Imagine you are Alice, stepping through the looking glass. Suddenly everything is reversed. Doorknobs(球形門把手) are on the wrong side of doors. The gearshift in your car is in the wrong place.
Twenty-five million Americans wake up every day in just such an awkward situation. They are the one in ten of us who are left-handed and face the world designed for the right-handed majority.
Why we are left- or right-handed remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of science. We know that nearly two out of three lefties are male and that left-handedness runs in families. According to one study, almost half the offspring of two left-handed parents will be left-handed. The Scots-lrish family Kerr(from the Gaelic word for "left" ) produced so many left-handers that in 1470 the family built its castle' s spiral stairways with a reverse twist to favor left-handed swordsmen.
On the other hand, heredity alone cannot explain lefties. At least 84 percent of them are born of two right-handed parents. And in 12 percent of genetically identical twins, one will be right-handed, the other left.
Perhaps the greatest puzzle of all is not why some people are left-handed, but rather why so few are. So, scientists are trying to discover the truth of the matter, and they are beginning to gain insight into many ways left-handed differ from right-handed by considering how their brains work.

Today, supermarkets are found in almost every large city in the world. But the first supermarket was opened only fifty years ago. It was opened in New York by a man named Michael Cullen.
A Supermarket is different from other types of stores in several ways. In supermarkets, goods are placed on open shelves. The customers choose what they want and take them to the check-out counter(付款臺). This means that fewer employees are required than in other stores. The way products are displayed( 陳列 )is another difference between supermarkets and many other types of stores. For example, in supermarkets, there is usually a display of small inexpensive items just in front of the check-out counter: candies, chocolates, magazines, cheap books and so on. Why are they there?
Most customers who go to supermarkets buy from a shopping list. They know exactly what they need to buy. They shop according to a plan. By the time they reach the check-out counter, the customers are feeling pleased and relaxed because the task of shopping is finished. In this happy mood, the customers see an attractive display of inexpensive goods that were not on their shopping lists. Now they feel like buying something just for their own pleasure and enjoyment. Many customers buy from these displays of products near the check-out counter, and this is exactly what the owner of the supermarket hopes they will do.
Another important fact in helping a customer choose what to buy is where a product is placed on a shelf. A product that is placed at eye level on a shelf sells much better than one which is placed on a lower or higher shelf. A product which is easy to see sells best.
Manufactures pay a higher price to have their products placed at eye level on the shelves.
The comfort and convenience of shopping centers is another factor which makes them popular with customers. Large parking spaces are provided, and many supermarkets stay open until very late at night.

四、翻譯(51)
51.There are things that parents can do at home to encourage children' s creativity. They can involve children in decision-making if the problem is appropriate, and ask children for suggestions. Parents should also encourage their children to talk out loud about things they are doing, for talking out loud improves language skills and thinking skills. It is also very important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their consequences. Even if it' s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills.

A Letter of Suggestion
March 10, 2013
Dear Wang Hal,
How are you doing? It has been a long time since we last saw each other. I am writing to you because I was told that you' d spent much of your time playing computer games on the Net. 1 do hope that you will give it up.
In my opinion, playing computer games will waste a lot of your time, and affect your study. Time is so precious for us students now, so we should make good use of it to learn more knowledge instead of playing computer games all day long. Besides, playing computer games for a long time will do harm to your health.
I do hope you will consider my suggestion, and stop playing computer games.
YOURS,
Zhang Hua
