Passage 1

Questions 11-15 are based on the following passage.

Do you ever wake up in the morning and think, “Wow, I’d actually rather trip and fall than go to school”? Not always to that extent, but that is how school made me feel.

Most teenagers have the same feeling towards getting up at the crack of dawn five days a week and heading to the miserable schools by bus. For me, school was never easy. The majority of my classes were B level, and I still struggled. Math and science were horrific: An hour of math made me feel like a day of murder, where I retained absolutely no information when I went home and did my homework.

The main reason I switched to the online school was to follow my dreams of being able to work and not to feel restricted by the school routine. I haven’t seen or talked to most of my classmates since I left. I didn’t relate to them on the level. Everyone was talking about their boyfriends, who they hooked up with or how drunk they got, while I wanted to talk about my job or how excited I was to go back to New York. Most of my friends are older than me.

Online school has given me a reason not to hate school and a reason to wake up every day, and I definitely don’t come home crying anymore. I can travel when I need to and I don’t have to have the flu many times a year as an excuse to miss school. I’ve lost friends from transferring, but I’ve gained a new sense of who I am and the opportunities I’m lucky enough to have in my life. Public school is great for some, but others need an excuse to differ from the crowd. Nothing is more important than being happy and having a purpose in life. Online school was the right choice for me, and if you haven’t considered it yet, maybe it’s time you do too.

11. The first paragraph implies that the writer.

A. couldn’t go to school for being hurt in a fall

B. preferred to travel rather than go to school

C. didn’t want to go to school very much

D. expected to go to school early in the morning

12. The writer went to online school mainly because she.

A. couldn’t finish her homework in time

B. was prejudiced by her science teacher

C. broke the school rules too many times

D. wanted to be free to do what she liked

13. Why didn’t the writer want to keep in touch with her friends?

A. They are always talking about something rubbish.

B. They often get the writer wrong in their relationships.

C. They like to get drunk with their old friends.

D. They aren’t willing to do a job in New York.

14. What is the most important about online school for the writer?

A. The disappearance of hating school

B. The happiness of finding a life purpose

C. The high grade of English

D. The freedom to travel

15. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. My experience of online school.

B. My opinion on science.

C. My decision to switch to online school.

D. My loss of friendship.

Passage 2

Questions 16-20 are based on the following passage

Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity(逆境). But it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.

J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6. Her good friend-Sean became the first person to encourage her and help her build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.

“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”

Though there were many difficulties, Rowling continued her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn’t until l990 that she first came up with the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls, it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that “the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. To my great disappointment, I didn’t have a pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details came up in my brain, and this thin, black-haired, bespectacled(戴眼鏡的)boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.

That same year, her mother died after a ten-year fight with serious diseases, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.

During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with depression. Unemployed, she finished her first novel in cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being refused by l2 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.

Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, J. K. Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her friend’s encouragement as well as her ambition to write.
