Pressure Cooker (壓力鍋) Safety
When you are cooking with a pressure cooker, you should learn a few common sense(常識(shí)) rules:
1. Never leave the cooker unwatched when it is in use.
2. Add sufficient liquid but never past the recommended fill-point. Overfilling the colder may block the vent pipe (排氣孔) and cause the cooker to explode.

5. Never try to force a pressure cooker cover to open. Allow the cooker to cool or run it under cool water before trying to open the cover.
6. Clean the cooker thoroughly after each use. Mild detergent(洗滌劑) and hot water work the best. Do not use stove ash or sand for they may damage the cooker. The gasket(密封圈) is best cleaned in warm soapy water and then dried. Store the gasket in the bottom of the pot.

Friends play an important part in our daily lives, and although we may take friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a few. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy (親密) between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence; although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common—they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to tolerate difference of opinion.
In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experience and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class race.

Today supermarkets are found in almost every large city in the world. But the first supermarket was opened only fifty years ago. It was opened in New York by a man named Michael Cullen.
A supermarket is different from other types of stores in several ways. In supermarkets, goods are placed on open shelves. The customers choose what they want and take them to the check-out counter(付款臺(tái)).This means that fewer employees are required than in other stores. The way products are displayed is another difference between supermarkets and many other types of stores. For example, in supermarkets, there is usually a display of small inexpensive items just in front of the check-out counter: candies, chocolate, magazines, cheap books and so on. Why are they there?
Most customers who go to supermarkets buy from a shopping list. They know exactly what they need to buy. They shop according to a plan. By the time they reach the check-out counter, the customers are feeling pleaded and relaxed because the task of shopping is finished. In this happy mood, the customers see an attractive display of inexpensive goods that were not on her shopping list. They feel like buying something just for their own pleasure and enjoyment. Many customers buy from these displays of products near the check-out counter, and this is exactly what the owner of the supermarket hopes they will do.
Another important fact in helping a customer choose what to buy is where a product is placed on a shelf. A product that is placed at eye level on a shelf sells much better than one which is placed on a lower or higher shelf. A product which is easy to see sells best. Manufacturers pay a higher price to have their products placed at eye level on the shelves.
The comfort and convenience of shopping centers is another factor which makes them popular with customers. Large parking spaces are provided, and many supermarkets stay open until very late at night.

There are many ways to learn about people of other lands. One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this.
One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils (面紗) to hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion.
The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton.
The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.
Worldwide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim (帽沿) up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.

Do you know how to use a mobile phone without being rude to the people around you?
Talking during a performance irritates (激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate (振動(dòng)). When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance.
Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces.
Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid the embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off.
When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.
Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would be on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling in a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.
51. What should you do when you need to answer a phone call during a performance?
52. The author implies that the use of mobile phones in such places as museums should be_____.

Many post-80s couples are complaining that going to the movies, shopping or attending parties have become impossible since their kids were born. That’s the way most parents are living their lives, no weekends of their own, no time to visit friends, not even a chance of promotion in their jobs.
Asking help from their parents might be a way out, but problems are that some aging parents are not strong enough to take care of the kids, and that the kids may also become too spoiled by their grandparents.
Then, here comes a solution: families with kids can form a small group, and parents of each family can take turns to look after all the kids in this group on weekends. Thus, other parents can have some quiet time and feel free to do something they’ve been planning for a long time. At the same time, the kids can make new friends and won’t be hanging around their parents all day long. This is baby-pooling.
